“And now, what does the LORD require of you? To Fear the LORD your God”

Recently, I found myself being called into deeper devotion and discipline in prayer. My prayers were falling flat; they were uninspired, lacking fire, and dry. I had many distractions occurring in my life during this same time. These distractions were encroaching into my prayer spaces reducing the once sacred spaces into common rooms. Not only did I need to raise the kedusha (elevate the holiness) of my own spirit, I needed to raise the kedusha in my prayer spaces. However, rather than re-dedicate these spaces, Father called me into a new sacred space altogether. I allowed Holy Ghost to lead me to a new place of prayer. As soon as I crossed the threshold, I understood the reason for His call was so that I could fulfill His requirements. I heard these words in my spirit, “And now, O Reina, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God…” Deuteronomy 10:12 A Part NIV and I knelt to my knees and began to reverence God. I was desperately impoverished in the reverence of God. Bankrupt even. Worse yet, I didn’t even know it.
How did this happen? It all had to do with my posture.
There are several postures we adopt while in prayer.
STANDING / 1Samuel 1:26 NIV – “and she said to him, ‘Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD’.”
WALKING / Isaiah 30:21 NIV – “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”
SITTING / Luke 10:39 NIV – “she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said”.
HANDS RAISED / Psalm 28:2 NIV – “Hear my cry for mercy as I call to You for help, as I lift up my hands toward Your Most Holy Place.”
PROSTRATE / Numbers 20:6 NIV – “Moses and Aaron went from the assembly to the entrance to the tent of the meeting and fell facedown, and the glory of the LORD appeared to them.”
KNEELING / Luke 22:41 NIV – “He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,”
BOWING / Psalm 95:6 KJV - “O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.”
(Note, Kneeling and Bowing may appear to be the same posture. However, they are different. Bowing is the Hebrew word kara (Strongs H3766). It represents the “physical gesture that reveals inner allegiance and foretells cosmic realities”. Bowing is united with reverence and allegiance. It is a posture that demonstrates deep respect for the presence of God. We bow upon entering and leaving the presence of the Sovereign God, the God of all).
Have you heard it taught that these postures are only heart postures? There is popular doctrine in the church today which teaches that it is only the posture of our heart in prayer that matters; the position of the body is irrelevant. This doctrine is dangerous and it is untrue. This doctrine is not spoken with words but instead, it is communicated loudly through the mannerisms and behaviors of the majority of modern church gatherings. Consider it for yourself. Are there times of bowing incorporated into the service? Do people bow when they enter the sanctuary? There aren’t kneelers attached to the pews. For the converts, new to the faith, there is no modeling of bowing for them to emulate and fall in love with. Where is the fear of the LORD?
Man is spirit, we have a soul and we dwell in a body. These three components to man constitute our being here on this earth and how we operate (live, move and have our being) during our sojourning here. In Thessalonians 5:23, the Word of God teaches us that all three components of man are important to God and to us. “Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again.”
The posture of our heart in prayer is of great significance. The posture of our body in prayer is a principal concern too.
Holy Spirit led me to a new secret place, God’s sacred space where His presence is so palpable. I immediately bowed down on my knees in the presence of the King of kings and Lord of Lords the second I entered into the place. I was not supplicating. I was not begging. I was bowing my knee in reverence to God Almighty. And it felt AMAZING! This is what my soul was missing. The fire of God came back!
It is the heart of Father that the fear of God, the reverence of God, adorns the souls of His children yet again. Over the course of the next few weeks, as Holy Spirit leads, I will be uploading teachings on the reverence of God on this site. Join our mailing list so you don’t miss any of these teachings!
Your Turn! I would love to keep this conversation going in the chat:
Has there ever been a season when you felt God call you into a deeper reverence for Him? What did that look like?
How has the fear of the LORD shaped your prayer life and worship?
May we see a revival in reverence of God, in Jesus mighty name. Amen.
